From all that can be dis-covered these birds have been known for severalcenturies, but upon that point definite informa-tion is lacking. A greater amount of attention has been paid to purity of race in Belgium thanin Holland, for the Flemish people are remark-ably skilful in all matters relating to breeding ofanimals and birds. For some time it was thoughtthat our Pencilled Hamburghs(se6 Hamburqhs)were descended from the Campine, as they aresimilar in all respects save comb. Later obser-vations, however, have led to a modification ofthis opinion, as it is not improbable that theycame from the Friesland fowl, which has a rosecomb, and is, consequently, nearly allied to theHamburgh. But it may be accepted that cen-turies ago the Braekel, Campine, and Frieslandfowls had the same progenitors and were iden-tical, such differences as have manifested them-selves being the result of artificial selection and

The last-named explains thesmall size of the Campine, which for a long timehas been bred on the sandy lands of NorthBelgium between the city of Malines and theDutch border, where activity of habit is essen-tial as food is scarce, and where the tendency inall animals is towards small size of body. Cam-pines have been introduced into Britain andsecured a fair amount of favour, but chiefly asexhibition stock. But many of these are Brae-kels, not Campines. In shape the Campine is long in body, butsmall and narrow, fairly round in breast, verywell developed behind, and the legs are ofmedium length. It is alert and active, quickin movement, fairly good in carriage, the headheld well up. There are two colours, namely,the gold and the silver. The former have aground colour of golden-yellow, the latter ofsilvery-white, upon which in each variety thereare markings or pencillings across the greaterpart of the body feathers of black, not consist-ing of solid but
