Rapunculus), a native of GreatBritain, is a biennial with running white succu-lent roots, which are eaten as a salad, (w. w.) Campanulacese.—This is the name forthe nat. ord. of dicotyledonous plants whichcontains the Bluebell, the true Bluebell of Scot-land. This order shares with heathers andheaths two peculiarities—the bell of heatherpersists in a withered state on the fruit, so doesthe bell of bluebell; the stamens of heathersare not adherent to the petals, neither are thestamens of bluebells. The distinctive charactersare: (1) petals grown together, forming a regu-lar bell; (2) a chambered ovary not in theinside, but on the outside of the flower; (3)the five stamens attachedto the top of the ovary.The plants are herbs withsimple narrow leaves andmilky juice.
