THE three swam slowly along, quite enjoying the cooldepths of the water. Every little while they met with somestrange creature—or one that seemed strange to the earthpeople—for although Trot and Capn Bill had seen manykinds of fish, after they had been caught and pulled from thewater, that was very different from meeting them in their ownelement, face to face/ as Trot expressed it. Now that thevarious fishes were swimming around free and unafraid intheir deep-sea home, they were quite different from the gasp-ing, excited creatures struggling at the end of a fishline, orflopping from a net. Before long they came upon a group of large fishes lyinglazily near the bottom of the sea. They were a dark colorupon their backs and silver underneath, but not especiallypretty to look at. For a moment the group of fishes stared at her solemnly.Then one of them remarked in a disdainful manner: Come, my dears, let us leave these vulgar creatures. Im not as vulgar as you are! exclaimed Trot, muchoffended by this speech. Where I came from we only eatcodfish when there s nothing else in the house to eat.
