He was the last of thegreat furniture designers of the eighteenth century andlived to see all beauty vanish from English furni-ture1 in the deluge of vulgar ugliness and banalitythat poured in as a consequence of aping FrenchEmpire styles, a source of inspiration not to be com-mended at its best. The representative Sheraton type of furniture, aswe are accustomed to understand it, was based entirelyon his first book and richly deserves all the distinctionand originality he claims for it. In his later books thereis a marked and rapid deterioration in the quality ofthe designs given. Whether it was because Sheratonwas failing in inspiration, or because he was trying toaccommodate his designs to a popular taste that clam-oured loudly for the latest French forms, it would behard to say. It was probably the latter, for one whohad produced types of such artistic excellence a fewyears before could scarcely sink to such depths of 1 Clouston: Chippendale.
