Ad-ditional power may be cheaply and quickly added electrical-ly and a prosperous business is always wanting morepower in the polishing room, as any superintendent ofa large plant will cheerfully testify. These are some of thereasons why the electrical system of driving is makingrapid headway in large plants. The electrical system of driving also has the advantagethat one may start in a small way and keep on acldingmotors as more power is required, as it has been found thatit is cheaper to add another motor with each new groupof lathes than to take them out and replace with larger oneswhen more power is wanted; in fact, the more motors thebetter, as far as consumption of current is concerned, be-cause the more motors you have the less shafting therewill be and the fewer belts. It is in doing away with shaft-ing and belts that one of the chief gains is made by theelectrical system. Consequently one need never sell a 34 THE POLISHING AND PLATING OF METALS.
