GEORGE CRABBE This poet was born on the twenty-fourth ofDecember, 1754, at Aldborough, in Suffolk, where his father and grandfather were officersof the customs. At the school where he re-ceived his education he gained a prize for oneof his poems ; and on leaving it he became anapprentice to a surgeon and apothecary in hisnative village. On the completion of his ap-prenticeship, abandoning all hope of successin his profession, he went to London to com-mence a life of authorship. Unknown andunfriended, he endeavoured in vain to inducethe booksellers to publish his writings. Atlength, in 1780, two years after his arrival inthe great metropolis, he ventured to print athis own expense a poem entitled The Can-didate, which was favourably received. Hewas soon after introduced to Edmund Burke, who became his friend and patron, and pre-sented him to Fox and other eminent con-temporaries. In 1781 he published TheLibrary, and was ordained a deacon. In thefollowing year he became curate of Ald-boro
