THE BERMUDAS 57 traded with the West Indies and America, and carried saltfish from Newfoundland to Europe, returning with cargoesof port wine. On occasions, too, they would meet thefleets from India and carry the produce of the East to theWest Indies. This industry was, however, practicallykilled by the advent of steam, and the inhabitants thenhad to look about for other means of employment. ColonelWilliam Reid, the Governor at this critical period, solvedthe difficulty to some extent by calling attention to theagricultural possibilities of the Bermudas, and now, thoughonly one-quarter of their area is suitable to cultivation,the islands yield crops of potatoes, onions, tomatoes, andother vegetables which find a ready market in the UnitedStates in the months when those products are not in seasonin America.
