BRITISH GUIANA 137 runs parallel to the right bank of the Demerara River forabout two miles. It is in this street that the principalmerchants offices are situated. In it and in LombardStreet are many very attractive shops and stores. Not far from the stellings stands the Stabroek Market, ahuge iron and glass structure 80,000 sq. ft. in area (1882),which in the early hours of the morning presents a scene ofgreat activity, while at the other end the Reading Roomand Museum of the Royal Agricultural and CommercialSociety (an institution founded in 1844 and incorporatedin 1866) occupy a prominent position. The museum is openfree every day, and those who have not time to visit theinterior of the colony may get some idea of what life in it islike from the Natural History collection and picture galleryof local views.
