Herods commands, the wise men took their leave, andset off for Bethlehem, which was only six miles from Jerusalem. * The exact date of the birth of Christ has occasioned much dispute. Dionysius Exiguus,a Syrian monk of great learning in the sixth century, published as the result of his researches, the opinion that Christ was born 753 years after the founding of Home—or as you will some-times see in the books, A. u. c.—Anno Urbe Condita—753. As no one could then prove to thecontrary, that year was after a time generally adopted by the nations of Europe as the year 1of the Christian era. But within the last two hundred years, Biblical scholars have discoveredby comparing the death of Herod, the date of which is known absolutely, and the date whencertain Koman governors ruled in Judaea, that the date of Dionysius was several years toolate. It is now generally believed that Christ was born in 749 A. u. c, or four years beforeour era, though Lewin and some others say it was six years.

626 Bible and Commentator. When the wise men departed, the star directed them to the house, wherethey saw the young child, with Mary his mother, and they fell down, andworshipped him. Then, according to the custom in that part of the world, when great persons were approached, and espe-cially kings, they opened their treasures, andpresented unto him gifts; gold, and frank-incense, and myrrh, the frankincense and myrrhboth being valuable gums from Arabia, andother parts of the East. The wise men having seen Jesus, and left thissuitable supply to his parents, who, thoughdescended from King David, were but poor, departed for their own homes. Their nearestway was that which they took, and so they hadno need to return to Jerusalem, as Herod desiredthem to do ; but the grand reason why they didnot was because God warned them, in a dream, not to return to Herod. God then spoke to Joseph by an angel in aMTRRH- dream, and ordered him to leave Bethlehem directly, with the infant Jesus and his moth
