THE MEN WHO DARED—SAILORS ON THE HARTFORD Al-TER PASSING THE NEW ORLEANS FORTS On this page of unwritten history McPherson and Oliver, the NewOrleans war-time photographers, have caught the crew of thestaunch old Hartford as they relaxed after their fiery test. Inunconscious picturesqueness grouped about the spar-deck, themen are gossiping or telling over again their versions of the greatdeeds done aboard the flagship. Some have seized the opportunityfor a little plain sewing, while all are interested in the new andunfamiliar process of having their pictures taken. The nota-ble thing about the picture is thenumber of young faces. Only afew of the old salts whose beardedand weather-beaten faces give evi-dence of service in the old navystill remain. After the greattriumph in Mobile Bay, Farragutsaid of these men: I havenever seen a crew come up likeours. They are ahead of the oldset in small arms, and fully equalto them at the great guns.
