Wilson raid through Alabama andGeorgia in the spring of 1805, andremained with the cavalry untilit crumbled with the Confederacyto nothing. The lower photographof the rails laid across the piles ofties shows how the Confederatecavalry, east and west, destroyedmillions of dollars worth of prop-erty. While Generals Lee andBragg and Hood were wrestlingwith the Union armies, the Con-federate cavalry were dealing blowafter blow to the material resourcesof the North. But in vain; themagnificently equipped Unionpioneer corps was able to lay railsnearly as fast as they were de-stroyed by the Confederates, andwhen the Army of Northern Vir-ginia shot its weight in men fromthe ranks of Grants army in thefearful campaign of 18(i4, the rankswere as constantly replenished.
