Photograph of the photographer Dr. George Wharton James (1858-1923), ca.1890-1905, taken outdoors on a paved sidewalk near a grassy area. He is kneeling down to peer at his small bird (named "Scraggles" or "Srogles) perched on his left shoe. James has dark wavy hair combed up and back from his face and a long dark beard with mustache. He is wearing a buttoned double-breasted overcoat. He is probably in his 30's or 40's.
