By theaid of a couple of English traders, Captains Brownand Gordon, then visiting at Honolulu, Kalani ofOahu defeated his rival and put him to death.Immediately he began to grow jealous of his allies,and having an ambition of his own to rule overall of the islands, he planned to kill them andthen, with the ships and a fleet of war canoes, sailto Hawaii to attack Kamehameha. He managedto murder the captains, but in such a bunglingmanner that the sailors escaped with the vessels,going to Hawaii direct, when they turned themover to Kamehameha with all their arms andammunition. This was the conquerors opportunity, and,assisted by his marshals, he mustered over six-teen thousand warriors, and with the best equipped,as well as the largest army Hawaii had known,in the spring of 1795 set sail with his immensefleet of canoes for Maui.
