And when the explosion of mirth came with:AH the same, he s a jolly good fellow—a jollygood fellow. I say, when all this had happened, and muchmore besides, I could yet feel resigned to my fate. Then when at Dawson I could hear the shrillwhistle from the would-be wag, and hear: Hes all the way from Puy-aMup, I couldjet remain in composure. Then when, at night at the theaters, the jest-ers would say: *Whar was it, stranger, you said you wasfrom? «*Puy-aMupr *0h, you did? followed by roars of laughterall over the house—all this I could hear withseeming equanimity. THE OLD OREGON TRAIL 227 N CHAPTER XXVI. Autobiography of the Author.O ArOLOGY is otfered for this writing al- » though no very apparent reason may ap-pear to call for it. I am aware that the life ofan humble citizen is of not much importance tothe public at large; yet, with a widening circleof friends following my advanced years, I feeljustified in recording a few of the incidents of avery busy life, and of portraying some customslong since fallen into disuse, and relating inci-dents of early days now almost forgotten. I was born at Huntsville, Butler county, Ohio, which is about twenty-five miles northeasterlyof Cincinnati, Ohio. This, to me, importantevent occurred on December 29, A.D. 1830, andso I am many years past the usual limit of threescore years and ten. My fathers ancestors came from England in1676, settled in Elizabeth City, New Jersey, builta very substantial stone house Avhich is still pre-served, furnished more than a score of hardysoldiers in the War for Independence,
