The city is laid out for a dis-tance of three miles from the bay to the shores of LakeWashington, a fine body of fresh water, twenty miles longby about three miles wide. A similar lake, called LakeUnion, connects with Lake Washington, and also with theSound, and the suburbs of the city in a northeast direc«tion advance to its shores. Seattle is the center of aremarkably complete system of steam navigation, whichembraces all the towns and lumbering camps on theSound, and also the navigable rivers of the region. A fleetof twenty-five steamboats is engaged in the Ic cal trade ofthe Sound, running to Tacoma, Olympia, Hood^s Canal,Port Townsend, La Conner, Whatcom, and many minorpoints, and also up the White, Snohomish, Skagit, andSnoqualmie rivers. There is an excellent system of electric and cable roads.An excursion that can be heartily recommended to visitorsis to take a cable car to Lake Washington, where there areattractive lakeside resorts with facilities for yachting androwing. Another pleasant cable trip is to the northernsuburb of Queen Anne town, on the shore of Elliot bay-From the highest ground in the city, crossed by the linesof cable road running to Lake Washington, there is asuperb view of the great mountain which is called Rainierin Seattle, and Tacoma in Tacoma.
