Smale, whomay be considered the oldest Setter judges,and who have owned dogs whose prowess inthe field has brought them high reputation.Mr. B. J. Warwick has within recent yearsowned probably more winners at field trialsthan any other owner, one of his best beingCompton Bounce. Captain Heywood Lons-dale has on several occasions proved theIghtfield strain to be staunch and true, aswitness the doughty deeds of Duke of thatilk, and the splendid success he achievedat the grouse trials in Scotland, July, 1906,with his Ightfield Rob Roy, Mack, and Dot,the first-named winning the all-aged stake,and the others being first and third in thepuppy stake. Mr. A. T. Williams has alsoowned a few noted trial winners, and fromScotland comes Mr. Isaac Sharpe, whoseGordon Setter, Stylish Ranger, effectuallyput a stop to the silly argument that all thisbreed are old mens dogs, by winning a bigstake or two three years ago. Many of the older field-trial men holdtenaciously to the opinion that the modernexhibition Setter is useless for high-classwork, and contend that if field-trial winnersare to be produced they must be bred fromnoted working strains. As a fundamentalprinciple this argument will not hold water,for the contrary has been proved many times.Doubtless this prejudice against show dogshas been engendered by the circumstancethat many owners of celebrated bench win-ners care nothing about their dogs beingtrained, in some cases generation after
