THE ENGLISH MASTIFF. 23 During the earlier part of the past cen-tury the most noted Mastiff breeders wereMr. Lukey and Captain Gamier, and alittle later Mr. Edgar Hanbury. Mr. Lukeylaid the foundation of his kennel, whichafterwards became so famous, by thepurchase of a brindle bitch from the Chats-worth kennels. Among the many celebrateddogs owned and bred by Mr. Lukey must Bloodhounds, a breed with which hisname will ever be associated. Mr.Greens Monarch (2,316) was another fawnstanding over 33 inches high. As a sirehe was principally noted as having siredScawfell (5,311), Nero (6,373), and Gwen-dolen (6,390). He was the grandsire of those twocelebrated Mastiffs Mr. Hanburys Rajahand Mr. Fields King, the sire of Turk,bred by Miss Anglionby. Mr. E. Nichols,Miss Hales, Mrs. Rawlinson, and the Rev.M. B. Wynne, were well-known breedersand successful exhibitors in the early daysof dog shows. The following are a few of the mostcelebrated Mastiffs of the past forty years :Turk (2,349) mentioned above, was a fawn,and was considered the best Mastiff ofhis day ; he won numerous prizes for hisdifferent owners, and eventually ended hisdays in the kennels of Mr. Edwin Brough,who relinquished Mastiffs in favour of in the early seventies, but it is not as ashow dog alone that this dog has a claimto be mentioned, for he sired many goodMastiffs, who in their turn left their markon the breed.
