The defign of this parable is manifefledat firll fight, and ftands a beautiful and un-fading memorial of the fulness, the freerness, and extent of divine mercy to thegreateft of finners ; it not only declaresthat it is the fixed determination of heavento forgive, and that mercy is an eflentialattribute of deity, the brightefl: ftar in theeternal crown; but it fhews that this glo-rious dispofition of heaven to forgive, en-tirely coincides with the feelings of hu-manity ; for the eternal God condescendsto appeal to that paternal tenderness whichhe hath planted in the human breafl:, invindication of his own conduft in pardon-ing finners, and in explanation of the na-ture and extent of his m.ercy.
