LACIER, once thefavorite huntingground of theBlaekfeet and nowfor fifteen years strictly pre-served, has a large and grow-ing population of creatures ofthe wild. Its rocks and preci-pices fit it especially to be thehome of the Rocky Mountainsheep and the mountain goat. Both of these large andhardy climbers are found inGlacier in great numbers.They constitute a familiarsight in many of the placesmost frequented by tourists. Trout fishing is particu-larly fine. The trout are ofhalf a dozen western vari-eties, of which perhaps thecutthroat is the most com-mon. In Lake St. Mary theMackinaw is caught up totwenty pounds in weight. So widely are they distrib-uted that it is difficult toname lakes of special fishingimportance.
