Capt. Eshle-man, commanding one of the batteries, was woundedalong with 4 enlisted men, another being killed, where-upon Capt. Squires, calling for reenforcements, wasordered by Longstreet, who had no more artillery, towithdraw the guns gradually, one at a time, coveringthe movement by the fire of the pieces remaining inposition. The Confederate Artillery was undoubtedly over-matched in this affair, yet, at the very moment of itswithdrawal, the Federal batteries, which had suffereda loss of but 2 killed and 2 wounded, ceased firing, al-lowing Capt. Squires the honor of the last shot. It wasthis fact, perhaps, which gave credence to the reportthat Longstreets guns had prevailed and upon such abelief Beauregard wrote in his official accoun
