Thevariety of fields which he explored is shown by the fact that atthe first international exposition at London in 1861 he exhibiteda centrifugal pump, a separator for sugar factories, and a ma-chine for polishing plate glass, all of which were at the time insuccessful operation. His attention was first specially turned to iron-making at thetime of the Crimean war in 1S54. when he engaged in the con-struction of guns and projectiles.
