NATURAL CONTROL. 41 longevity experiments in the laboratory we have used test tubes withthe bottoms removed and placed in trays with moistened sand. Themouths of the tubes are closed with absorbent cotton. Observa-tions can readily be made through, the glass without disturbing theticks and the air in the tube is kept moderately humid. Forlongevity experiments out of doors, we have made use of lj-inchglass tubing cut in lengths of about 10 inches. In one end of thesetubes about 2 inches of moist sand and clay is firmly packed toprevent the escape of the ticks through the bottom. These tubesare then set in galvanized-iron cylinders which are sunk into thesoil. The soil from the inside of the cylinder is removed to a suffi-cient depth to allow the surface of the dirt in the tube to be on a levelwith the su
