The clear lines of the graceful tower and spire ofthe church, standing out against the serene sky, arestrangely effective and suggestive of solemn feeling,which the houses in deep shadow help to intensify.From the bridge in the foreground to the distantarches, the bank on the left of the canvas is full ofhappily-arranged details, the reflections of which on thesurface of the water greatly enrich the tone of thepicture. This surface, with the images mirrored on it,is painted with an indescribable delicacy and tenderness,and the reflected glow of the evening sky forms aradiant path in the midst, The chief details of the foreground—the water-liliesand rushes, the gliding stream and the barge movingto its moorings for the night—are features which addmuch to the charm of the scene, and they are paintedwith singular
