From the Cat and Fiddle Inn,extending east across this trough to within two miles fromBuxton, an out-crop of the fourth bed of grit takes placethat forms a long ridge called Axe Edge—its highest pointbeing 1,809 f^^t above the level of the sea—(from hax(Scandinavian) a hill; or hoch (German) high, or a height;and ecg (Anglo Saxon) the edge, or sharp ridge of amountain ;) and between this elevation and the above Inn,which is 1,750 feet above the sea, we have one of the mostperfect lesser coal-basins into which the trough of the riverGoyt is broken up. The boundary of theMountain Limestone, which forms the lowest group of thecarboniferous rocks, runs along a line of fault on theeastern flank of Axe Edge. Its lithological characterconsists of a mass of pure pale grey thick bedded lime-stone. There are thin partings in it, here and there, ofshale and clay, also nodules and layers of chert, and two ormore contemporaneous beds of igneous rock called Amygdyloid or Toadstone. The upper part of the river Goyt, though little visitedby tourists, is of great beauty, specially the part aboveGoyts Bridge. On either side, the beds of sandstone risefrom the middle of the trough in sheets of heathery moor-land, broken off abruptly along their upper edges. Beyondthem are ot
