APING PURCHASE OF A HUNTER. There is no description of horse which could beapplied to so many purposes, racing excepted, asthe powerful English Hunter. Setting aside hisown peculiar services in the field, he is fit to carrya man on the road, on the field of battle, and heanswers for every kind of draught. Indeed, weare inclined to believe no horse would equal him inploughing; and as for road-work on harness, eitherslow or fast, nothing could touch him, in a carriageproperly suited to his powers. It is, however, noless true than singular, that out of a hundredsportsmen assembled at the meeting of a packof fox-hounds, not half-a-dozen would be foundmounted on horses which they themselves hadbred. This arises from two causes,—first, thegreater part of them have not patience to await thearrival of a youns: horse at his best, and conse-quently sell the few they do breed, without givingthem a fair trial; and, secondly, such has, of lateyears, been the prejudice against riding mares in the

Thereare, of course, exceptions to this proceeding. Agreat proportion of English yeomen and farmersare very excellent horsemen, and, as such, havingthe capability of making their young horses intohunters, and, distinguishing them by riding themafterwards with hounds, obtain now and then ashigh a price for them as they fetch after havingpassed through the hands we have described.
