ll metacarpalbones below. Inwardly,it articulates with thecuneiform magnum andthe cuneiform medium. The CuneiformMagnum is a Hat bonecovered on its two surfaceswith cartilage. It occupiesa position between theastragalus above and thecuneiform medium below, and articulates besideswith the cuboid, the cal-cis, and the cuneiformparvum. The Cuneiform Medium is a triangularbone, and, like the mag-num, presents two flat-tened surfaces for articu-lation with the magnumabove, and the largemetacarpal or canon-bonebelow. By smaller articu-lations it is also connectedwith the cuboid and thecuneiform parvum. The Cuneiform Parvum, the smallestbone in the hock, is situ-ated at the inner and in-ferior part of the joint, in-clining backwards, whereit articulates with thelarge and inner smallmetatarsal bones below, the magnum above, and the medium in front. The outer surface of this bone presents a smooth surface over which one ofthe tendinous branches of the flexor metatarsi plays in a synovial sheath.

DISEASES OF BONES RING-BONE A ring-bone is an enlargement extending over the front, and sometimesalso over the back, of the pastern. It consists of a diffused bony excre-scence growing out of or upon the large or small pastern bone, or both. When affecting the former it is described as high ring-bone (fig. 314),when the latter, as low ring-bone (fig. 313). It is common to all classesof horses, but more especially prevalent in cart-horses and thoroughbreds.
