u was published. In 1850 Prescott, whohad suffered domestic affliction, went abroad, visitingEngland and the Continent, and everywhere was receivedwith the highest honor. He never visited the scenes of hishistories. On his return he undertook the History ofPhilip II, which, unfortunately, he did not live to com-plete; two volumes appeared in 1855 and a third in 1856.In the latter year his continuation of Robertsons Historyof Charles V. was issued. He published also a volumeof Miscellanies, chiefly essays contributed to the NorthAmerican Review. Prescott died at Boston in 1859.His life was written by his friend, George Ticknor, thehistorian of Spanish literature. As an historian Prescott excels in vigorous and pic^turesque narrative. His work was based on a thoroughstudy of the original documents, so far as this could beeffected by one who depended on the sight of others. Yetthere can be no doubt about Prescotts broad and catholicscholarship, his carefulness in selecting facts, and the

Yet his chief object was to put liveliness into thenarrative, believing that if the sentiment was lively andforcible, the reader would be carried along without muchheed to the arrangement of periods. Emerson praisedPrescott in comparison with other historians for renderinghis work of such absorbing interest to his readers, formaking them feel its reality, while the others make battles,sieges and fortunes only words. In later years there hasbeen criticism on the value of the authorities which heexhibited so liberally in footnotes, especially in his Mex-ico and Peru.
