Manifestlyif this could be admitted there wouldbe little interest in enquiring furtherinto their details. But there arethree arguments against the state- o o ment, any one of which is effective.Although it is perhaps totally unnecessary to contradict thatwhich can be accepted by the unreflective only, it is sufficientlynear the purpose of this volume to slightly touch upon thematter, as pointing strong distinctions among ancient worships. First, there is the simple fact recorded in the Mosaicaccount itself, that there existed at that time, and had donepreviously, various religious systems, the rooting out of whichwas an important function of the liberated Hebrews.
