The green Christ, 1890, Maurice Denis

Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Green Christ, 1890, Maurice Denis, oil on cardboard. Acquired by the Musée d'Orsay in 2020. Text associated with the painting: "This small painting is both a religious scene and a radical pictorial experience. A green Christ stands out against a yellow cross against a background of bright red sky. On the rest of the surface, the shades of yellow leave guess angels collecting the blood of Christ on either side of the cross, and a crowd at his feet. For Denis, "the visible is the manifestation of the invisible"; painting should not imitate reality, but transpose it with his own means. Here he accentuates the color contrasts and simplifies the forms to the limits of abstraction.
