Text Appearing Before Image:
during the whole of the hostilities. The scene wasterrible. The steel leviathans of the sea were being rentasunder and pulverised by the terribly destructive modernarms, and amid the roar and crashing of the guns, shells werebursting everywhere, carrying away funnels, fighting tops, andsuperstructures, and wrecking the crowded spaces between thedecks. Turrets and barbettes were torn away, guns dis-mounted by the enormous shells from heavy guns; steelarmour was torn up and tlirown aside like paper, and manyshots entering broadsides, passed clean through and out at theother side. Whitehead torpedoes, carrying heavy charges ofgun-cotton, exploded now and then under the enemys ships;while both British and French torpedo boat destroyers, running at the speed of an ordinary train, were sinking orcapturing where they could. Through the dull, gloomy afternoon the battle continued.Time after time our ships met with serious reverses, for theAlison was sunk by the Eussian flagship Alexander II.,
Text Appearing After Image:
Naval Battle off Dungeness 309 assisted by two French cruisers, and this catastrophe wasfollowed almost immediately Ly the torpedoing of the newBritish cruiser Doris, and the capture of the new Germandynamite cruiser Trier. By this time, however, the vessels had approached withinthree miles of Dungeness, and the Campcrdoivn, Emjjress ofIndia, Royal Sovereign, Injiexible, and Warspite, lying near oneanother, fought nine of the enemys vessels, inflicting uponthem terrible punishment. Shots from the 67-tonners of theUmpress of India, Boyal Sovereign, and Camperdoivn, combinedwith those from the 22-tonners of the War spite, swept theenemys vessels with devastating effect, and during the three-quarters of an hour that the fight between these vessels lasted, the scene of destruction was appalling. Suddenly, with abrilliant flash and deafening detonation, the Eussian flagshipAlexander II, one of the vessels now engaging the five Britishships, blew up and sank, and ere the enemy could recoverf
