DescriptionThe great presidential puzzle, political cartoon by James Albert Wales, 1880.jpg |
English: 15--14--13.--The great presidential puzzle [The "Boss" Puzzle]. Illustration by James Albert Wales shows Senator Roscoe Conkling, leader of the Stalwarts group of the Republican Party, playing a puzzle game. All blocks in the puzzle are the heads of the potential Republican presidential candidates, among them Grant, Sherman, Tilden, and Blaine. Conkling rests his head on one hand and the other on Blaine's "head" as though ready to move it to the empty space in the box. Printed by Mayer, Merkel & Ottmann, Lithog., New York, 1880. Published in Puck, vol. 7, no. 158, p. 32, 17 March 1880.
