Let a stranger, particularlyone not a Moslem, look intently on anythingworn or carried on the person of an Arab, andhe will straightway, to nullify the spell, wet hisfingers and pass them over the object upon whichthe strangers gaze is cast. Inquire after thehealth of his wife, or seek to flatter him, and heraises a protecting hand to his face. Fetishes inthe images of hands are seen among the orna-ments worn about the persons of the women, symbolized in the decorations of utensils, andoccasionally on the exterior of their mosques.Over many an arched portal is the impression ofa black hand print to protect its inmates.
