Summary[edit]

Description
English: The former York to Hull Railway, east of Goodmanham, East Riding of Yorkshire, England.
As the railway traverses the southern Yorkshire Wolds between Market Weighton and Beverley, it passes through some huge embankments and cuttings to minimise the number of changes in gradient. This is the start of a deep cutting. The railway was closed in the mid 60s as a result of Beeching's review of the railway system... even though it was making a small profit at the time. A feasibility study has been done recently with a view to re-opening the line once again. The track from Beverley to York (the Hull to Beverley line is still in use) would have to be relaid and many other obstacles overcome (new bridges, slight diversions from the original route and compulsory purchase of various sections of the trackbed etc) and the estimated cost would be about £180m. Fortunately, the most difficult part - the vast earth movements required for this railway are almost all still intact along its length.
