That light, cruel, natural laugh echoes throughthe centuries, and follows the cat along her pathwayof pain. Mr. Pater, fretted to pity by his own tale,eliminated from later editions of Marius theheart-rending episode he could so ill endure. Wouldthat it were as easy to banish from Pussys historythe gloomy records of sorcery and persecution.
