re and more rare, and itseems scarcely probable that, under presentconditions, the remaining two species can resistthe fate of extinction for more than a few scoreof years. The True or Mountain Zebra (Equuszebra), familiar to the Hottentots as the daoiv,and to the Boers as the wilde paard (wildhorse), has been known to Europeans ever sincethe first colonising of the Cape by the Dutchin the middle of the seventeenth century. It ispeculiarly a mountain dweller, and has alwayshad a singularly restricted habitat in SouthernAfrica. Formerly it seems to have been com-mon upon every mountain range, from GreatNamaqualand in the west to Swaziland in theeast; but at the present day, thanks to in-cessant and senseless persecution, it is now-much scarcer, and is only found in small troopsof from five to a dozen or fifteen in certainmountains of Cape Colony (where it is as faras possible preserved), and here and therealong the Drakensberg and Lebombo moun-tains towards Swaziland. The mountain zebra standsfrom 12 to i2iV hands in height, and, from itsstrong, sturdy, and compact build, is wonder-fully adapted for getting about the difficultmountain country which it so peculiarly adorns.The legs are short and beautifully clean, thehoofs small, well-shaped, and hard as flints;the ears are long—much longer than those ofthe Burchells zebra and quagga—and give tothe animal a more asinine look than either ofthese two congeners. The body colouring is aclear, silvery white, and the markings of black,or very dark brown, extend to every part of thebody except the stomach.
