The canal leading from the conchais an opening through the petrous bone, lined with skin. It-is about one fourth of an inch in diameter, and an inchlong. It is an air chamber, and conducts the sound towardthe inner ear. The inner end of this canal is closed by amembrane, which is stretched tightly across it. This canalis called the external auditory canal. The middle portion of the ear is called the tympanum.It is an air chamber in the petrous bone, about as large asa small cherry. Its outer wall is formed by the thin mem-(142) HEARING. J43 brane across the end of the external canal. This is calledthe external membrane of the tympanum. Sometimes it iscalled the outer drum of the ear. There are other, smallermembranes, on the side of the tympanum, next to the innerear, which separates the middle from the inner portion ofthe ear. The tympanum is to convey thesound from the outer to the inner ear. The inner ear is a very singularly-shaped chamber in thepetrous bone. This chamber is filled with a watery fluid, 144 PHYSIOLOGY. and has in it the membranes on which the nerves of hearingare spread out. It is the most important part of the ear.The other portions may be destroyed, and yet the personcan hear quite well by this portion alone.
