Davids mother had the maid throw outcrusts of bread and tie lumps of fat on thetrees all winter, because when the snow is onthe ground it is sometimes hard for the birdsto lind things enough to eat. There was a plenty of things for the birdsto eat now, and they were easy enough to get,but some birds were picking at the scraps. Suddenly the birds flew up into a tree andtwo gray squirrels came and gnawed at thebread crusts, when the two crows that hadchased Davids cat came flapping down andtried to get at the scraps. But the squirrels stopped eating andchased the crows savagely; and the crowsdid nt fight back, but they just flew up alittle bit of a way and hovered there until thesquirrels began to eat again. Then they flapped down on the ground andbegan to sneak up toward the scraps; andthe squirrels darted at them and chased themagain.
