this process theuterus becomes very firm. The diagnosis is based upon the uniform enlargement of theuterus and upon the change in its consistency. In the chronic stagethere may be no tenderness on pressure. Chronic metritis may be regarded as a clinical term signifyinga uterus that is uniformly enlarged, firm in consistency, and onewhich has lost its normal flexibility. Chronic metritis is to be diagnosed from interstitial fibroids.(See Chapter XXVII.) ABSCESS OF THE UTERUS. Von Franque (Cent. j. Gyn., No. 20, 1902) reported 15 casesof undoubted abscess of the uterus, and Lea (Journal of Obstetricsand Gynecology of the British Empire, February, 1904) has addedanother case. The clinical diagnosis is of course diflScult. Thereis no way of distinguishing the condition from a suppurating inter-stitial fibroid. In all cases there is a history of puerperal, post-abortive or gonorrhoeal infection. Pyrexia will depend upon theacuteness and virulence of the infection as will also leukocytosis.

The uterus may or maynot be freely movable, is always sensitive to pressure, and its con-sistency is variable. Associated inflammatory lesions are invariablypresent. These cases usually terminate in perforation of the uterinewall into the peritoneal cavity, uterine cavity, or rectum. CHAPTEE XXVII. THE DIAGNOSIS OF FIBROMYOMA OF THE UTERUS.
