D. ON July 29, 1900, the Italian people were para-lyzed by the news of the assassination of KingHumbert I. With his aide-de-camp, the king was re-turning from a distribution of prizes at Monza, nearMilan, and was just entering his carriage when threerevolver shots hit him in quick succession, one piercinghis heart. He had only time to exclaim: It is noth-ing (b niente), and, sinking immediately into uncon-sciousness, he expired a short time after. The assassinwas Angelo Bresci, a native of Prato in Tuscany, butlately from the noted society of anarchists in Pater-son, New Jersey, whose motto is: Death to Rulers. The queen, Margherita, was out driving; and whenon her return to the Palace the truth that the kingcould not survive was made known to her, she burstinto tears, exclaiming
