mostenlightened statesman at the time, on the final committeeof three, the Court definitely submitted to the Emperoron the 9th July the following recommendations. The five ringleaders, including Pestel, Ruyleyeff,Mouravieff-Apostol.and Bestujeff-Ryoumen,to be quarteredalive; thirty-one others to be beheaded, and the remainderto be sent to penal servitude for life, and otherwise punishedin accordance with the degree of their guilt. The Emperor commuted these harsh sentences, andconsented to the death penalty being inflicted in the caseonly of the five ringleaders, whom Nicholas wished tohave shot because they were officers and gentlemen, but thecounsels of Benckendorff, if we are to believe vSchilder, pre-vailed, and they were hanged. Everybody knows the storyof the bungle with Ruyleyeff, who had to be hanged threetimes before he was successfully executed, which led to thefamous mot, put into the mouth of the victim himself : Inthis accursed country they cannot even hang you properly !
