oad wasnot unpicturesque. On one side of it now, for somedistance, is a bare yellow cliff hung with bushes, cappedby cypresses and riddled with romantic-looking caves, some of which are still inhabited (Plate 27). A little way along the road is an old and handsomefountain with a water trough. It is in the classicalstyle, and lacks nothing in the way of marble tabletand inscription (Plate 28). On the city side of the bridge is the queer littleChapel of Saint Andrew, built in 1462 to commemoratean occasion when the Pope, the cardinals, the priestsand monks of every degree, together with the wholepopulation of Rome, came to the foot of the bridgein solemn procession to receive a gift to the city. The present was nothing more than a mans head—a brown, shrivelled, mummified thing, in a box;but it was a part of no less a person than SaintAndrew, and it had reached Rome after very vividadventures. The Tiber here is a fine stream, no
