On nearingCastelnuovo it becomes a track across naked, inhospit-able downs, a road so long, so wearisome, so un-friendly that it must have preyed upon Pompiliasspirits, must have intensified her fatigue to sheermisery, and her yearning to rest and be still to anoverwhelming possession. She determined, in spite ofCaponsacchis entreaties, to spend the night at Castel-nuovo at any cost, to lie down and sleep at any risk,although she was almost within sight of Rome andwithin reach of safety. The last few miles of the roadhad made the journey hideous ; the grinding of thewheels on the stones had ground into her brain, andthe everlasting sound of the horses feet had maddenedher beyond all peace. Castelnuovo is so situated that on coming in fromthe north nothing is to be seen of the town (whichlies some way to the left of the road) until the carriageactually draws up at the door of the tragic inn, whichstands almost alone on the highway. 216

5. CASTELNUOVO CASTELNUOVO, as already stated, lies somelittle way to the left, or east, of the high road toRome. Indeed, the little town is separatedfrom that road by a deep valley rilled with olive trees.The highway at this part of its course runs along theedge of a lofty plateau, which forms the western slopeof the valley. From this plateau a narrow ridge runsout into the Campagna and, curving to the south, findsitself almost parallel with the road. Along the top ofthe ridge is the narrow by-way to Castelnuovo; whileat the extremity of the ridge, where it becomes suddenlyprecipitous, stands the small town, a pile of houses,roof above roof. It is easy, when making for Rome, topass Castelnuovo without seeing it, especially if thehedge by the side of the track is in leaf. But if thetraveller will stand on the Via Flaminia, just where isthe stone which marks twenty-six kilometres from Rome,and if he will find a gap in the bushes, he will see, im-mediately below him, a green valley, and
