e onewould gather that, even in Franceschinis time, it was abuilding which had been long familiar to the passer-by.Standing in front of this melancholy tavern, early inthe morning of a day in January, I found it easy to recallthe scene in the road for which it had formed the back-ground two centuries ago. In the highway would bethe group of dazed and sullen prisoners tied to theirhorses and surrounded by a guard of police. On thesteps before the door of the inn would be the distractedlandlord, very scantily dressed, whose sympathy with theill-fortune of his late guests would be tempered by a senseof the suspicion which had fallen upon his house ; whilefrom the upper windows the women of the inn, hastilyaroused, would be watching the movements of thestrange company. If Guido turned his gaze towards thesouth, he would see on the fringe of the plain the city ofRome made rose-coloured by the light of the risingsun, and would wonder what fate awaited him withinits gentle-looking walls. 160

Arezzo is one of the venerablecities of Italy, having been famous as Arretium, one ofthe twelve towns of the great Etruscan Federation.It was here that the Consul Flaminius, the road-maker,had his camp on the eve of the fatal battle of LakeTrasimene. Arezzo was never tired of fighting. Inthe bloody quarrel between the Guelphs and Ghibel-lines the men of Arezzo were at all times in the thickof it. They spent their leisure in the making of redpottery, which became famous the world over ; but onthe sound of alarm they kicked over the potterswheel and rushed to the ramparts with the clay stillred on their hands.
