It was from the town that Guido came. Hehad pursued the two on horseback, but he had nointention of confronting Caponsacchi alone. Cowardas he was he knew the priest too well for that. Hedid not dash up to the inn on a steaming horse andthrow himself from the saddle sword in hand. On thecontrary, he crept cautiously up to the house on foot.He had found that the two he sought were at the inn,so he had slunk off to the town, had awakened themagistrate and had come back with a party of suchpolice as the little place afforded.
