eresting because it represents thenarrowest part of the route—is not greatly changed, and,in old walls, old windows and stone doorways, presentsmany relics of the street as Guido saw it. The more ancient part of the street is habituallyfestooned with washing. The houses, indeed, aredraped with sheets, petticoats, and shirts, which form awhite cascade dripping from every window and onoccasion from the very roof. The display of whiteaffords an agreeable relief, for the street itself is darkand dirty. From Plate 17 it will be seen that the lane is sonarrow that it could have admitted little more than theline of tumbrels, for it will be noticed that the hoodedwine-cart at the bend of the lane nearly fills the roadway.At this particular bend in the lane is a very old house,which has been practically untouched by time, and isto-day as it was on that winter afternoon when theprocession rolled along to the gallows. Theupper windows would have afforded an excellent viewof the procession, for the house is just at the cornerwhere the street turns towards the Pantheon. Accordingto Baedeker, the building was erected in 1500 for thePapal Secretary, and would, therefore, have been nearlytwo hundred years old at the time of the story. Thedwelling of the secretary to His Holiness is now atavern known as Al Bramante, and is as picturesquea wine-shop as any in Rome (Plate 18). The carts carrying the condemned men then passedalong to the end of the street, where are still to be seenremains of old houses, unexpected stables and dingycourts which present too detailed an insight intoprivate life.
