Text Appearing Before Image:
ot the ridiculousship fountain, and on its summit the Santissima TrinitadeMonti (see Faldas map, Plate 106). The Piazza diSpagna does not figure in the story of Pompilia, althoughBrowning describes Pietro, periwig on head and canein hand, strolling into the square, toward the Boat-fountain where our idlers lounge, in order to inquireof the gossips what they knew of his wifes noble friend,Count Guido Franceschini. Faldas plan further shows the convent of SantaMaria Maddalena delle Convertite. It will be remem-bered that this religious body laid claim to Pompiliasproperty after her death (p. 93). The building has longsince been pulled down. It stood in the Corso, occupy-ing the whole of the area between the Via delle Convertiteand the Via S. Claudio. As will be seen from the plan, the chapel of the convent was in the Corso, while twocourtyards and a garden were enclosed by the very ex-tensive conventual buildings. * The Scala di Spagna, with its 137 steps, was constructed in 1721-25. 104
Text Appearing After Image:
42.—THE COUNTRY BETWEEN AREZZO AND ROME.The Route taken by Pompilia in her flight is shown thus— 3. THE NEIGHBOURHOOD OF THE VIA VITTORIA THOSE who rushed to Pompilias assistance, whenthe attack was made upon the house, believedher to be dying, and consequently a confessorwas sent for with the utmost haste. The nearest churchto the scene of the murder is the Church of SantAtanasio in the Via del Babuino (see Plate 106). Thischurch is attached to the Greek College, founded in1580, and it was to the principal of this college thatshe made confession, as she lay in the arms of GiuseppedAndillo (p. 77). The church and the college stillstand. The former is an imposing structure of reddish-grey brick with two low towers. It is dry and dusty-looking, as if bleached by centuries of sun, but isotherwise unchanged since the time when the priest randown the street to the house at the corner and pushedhis way through the crowd to Pompilias room. Quite near at hand also is the Church of Gesu eM
