He hears Euripides tellof the guides that influenced human conduct before thetime of Christ. He answers him. He wonders how farthe existing laws that at the moment control humanconduct are absolute and eternal. He returns once more to the matter in hand. Hediscusses the various pleas urged on behalf of the miti-gation of Guidos punishment and repudiates themall. He declines to allow that Guido can claim theenefit of clergy. He throws aside the appeal that isfounded upon mere mercy. He ignores the petition forleniency on the ground that his own life is very nearits end. He disregards the worlds opinion of his ver-dict and is indifferent as to the bearing of his decisionupon his reputation as a Pope. His last words are these : u Enough, for I may die this very night,And how should I dare die, this man let live ?Carry this forthwith to the Governor ! 295
