The BOROUGH OF BROOK-LYN comprises Kings County, includingthe former city of Brooklyn. The area is80.93 sq. miles and the population 2,000,848.North and east of Brookljm is the BOR-OUGH OF QUEENS, consisting of theformer Long Island City and a number ofold villages. The area is 117.36 sq. milesand the population 376,089. The BOR-OUGH OF RICHMOND consists ofStatep Island, with an area of 57.18 sq.miles and population of 97,870. It lies inthe bay five miles south of Manhattan.The total population of the greater city is5,583,871; including the suburbs, fromwhich_ people commute to New York, itis (estimated) 7,800,000. When, in 1822,Congress ceded the property to the city, itwas converted into a place of amusement,and was named Castle Garden. It becamethe home of opera, and was a place forgreat public gatherings. Here on Lafay-ettes return to America in 1824, six thou-sand persons assembled to greet him. Herein 183s S. F. B. Morse, the inventor of thetelegraph, publicly demonstrated by meansof a wire coiled about the interior of theGarden, the practicability of controllingthe electric current. Here in 1850 JennyLind, the Swedish singer, made her Ameri-can debut, under the management of P. T.Barnum. The Prince of Wales and LouisKossuth arrived here. From 1855 to 1890Castle Garden was an immigrant bureau,through whose portals millions of immi-grants entered America and as such is wellremembered by many persons. It becamethe Aquarium
