Some time during the years 1795 to 179S, while the regiment of Artil-lerists and Engineers was stationed at West Point, Colonel Rochefon-taiiie and Captain Rivardi, formerly of the French army, constructed asmall model front of a fortification. Upon the establishment of the I\Iilitary Academy, b)- actof Congress dated March 16, 1S02, instruction in militaryengineering began at once, and the elements of fortificationwere taught by the use of this model. Until iSiS the instruction in military engineering was bymeans of lecttires ilhistrated by the model abo\-e mentionedand by field exercises in practical engineering. The lectureswere deliyered by the Superintendent until 180S, by the teacherof French, Francis O. Masson, from iSoS to 1813, and afterthat by the professor of engineering.
