Upon the establishment of the I\Iilitary Academy, b)- actof Congress dated March 16, 1S02, instruction in militaryengineering began at once, and the elements of fortificationwere taught by the use of this model. Until iSiS the instruction in military engineering was bymeans of lecttires ilhistrated by the model abo\-e mentionedand by field exercises in practical engineering.
