The Sultan of Turkey was de-posed, and either committed suicide or was murdered. There were revoltsin Herzegovina and Bulgaria, and the troops sent to suppress these Ievoltscommitted many outrages. Servia and Montenegro made war upon Tur-key on behalf of the Christian subjects of the Porte; Russia came to thesupport of Servia and Montenegro. There was a vast deal of diplomacy, inwhich all the great powers joined, and on several occasions it looked asthough half of Europe would be involved in the difiiculty. Turkey and Servia made peace on March 1, 1877. The principalnations of Europe held a conference, and made proposals for reforms in THE SACKED CITY OF THE CEIMEA. 495

Turkey wliicli tlie Porte rejected, Russia declared war against TurkeyApril 24, 1877, and immediately entered the Turkish dominions in Rou-mania and Armenia. The war lasted until March 3, 1878, when a treaty of peace wasmade at San Stefano, near Constantinople. Many battles were foughtduring the war, and the losses were heavy on both sides; the severest bat-tles were those of the Shipka Pass and of Plevna.
